Phil Hay has called out Marcelo Bielsa for the lack of squad depth that Leeds United currently have, commenting during a Q&A on The Athletic.
What did he say?
United were unable to get anything against Queens Park Rangers, despite having 65.4% of possession and 17 shots to the opposition’s nine, while they even had a penalty.
Patrick Bamford was slammed by fans for his performance in the game, but what could also cause frustration is that there wasn’t an option to replace him from the bench.
The lack of options stretches further than that though, as Bielsa only opted to use two of his available substitutes.
Hay admitted that the lack of squad depth at the club is one of his annoyances: “To touch on the squad size, it’s one of the traits about Bielsa which I find frustrating. What chance did he have of changing it from the bench today? Very little.
“Granted there are injuries but every club carries injuries. At Leeds, they don’t have any depth and it’s very risky to think you can succeed like that.”
Slim squad
The feeling around this topic will only be amplified by the club’s failure to have made any signings during the January transfer window.
Within the Q&A, there were specific mentions of Che Adams and Jarrod Bowen, though Hay was not able to give any updates that were too positive or showed much progression at all.
A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?
In addition to that, Football Insider have reported that they have been priced out of a move for Andre Gray, as Watford are demanding a £2m loan fee, as well as the whole of the striker’s £80-a-week wages being paid.
This shows that Leeds have failed to make much real progress, which means that the frustration around a lack of squad depth could be set to continue.
Meanwhile, Leeds fans have a massive fear after witnessing the loss to QPR.
