da 888casino: With so many strikers on their books already, it would appear that buying another one would be the last thing Manchester City need to do. But great teams improve their squads continuously, regardless of whoever they have already. Fernando Torres would improve any team, he is that good. If Manchester City have serious aspirations of winning the Premier League, then Torres is the calibre of player that must seek to attract.
Carlos Tevez is the best striker that City have at the moment. His contribution to the team last season was vital and he showed that he was worth the money that they paid for him. Tevez will continue to score goals and even in a squad as good as City’s, he remains the stand out player. Adebayor is a very good player and a goalscorer with Premiership experience, for many clubs he would be an asset, he will still have something to give City but whether he will stay for years is another issue. The likes of Bellamy and Santa Cruz are still good players, but they now have to be seen as back-ups. At most other clubs in the country, even the world, they would easily play every game, but City are now a much bigger club. If Mancini’s team are to sustain regualr challenges for top honours, then they need players that are the standard of Tevez, and Torres is exactly one of those players. Whether they actually manage to secure his services will depend on the man himself, but even a club with the attacking talents that City have at their disposal, a man of his ability is who they should be buying.
Torres may not be everyone’s first choice, but he is in an elite bracket of players. In a season where his team under-performed, and he was regularly injured, he still managed 22 goals last season. There are few players who can guarantee goals, and Torres, like Rooney, Drogba, Villa, Messi and Ronaldo does that. Even with a lack of games, or an injury, they can come into a game and be a threat immediately.
There is no point in Man City trying to buy players who don’t improve their team. As their strikers are already very good, then they must make the next step up. A squad with Torres, Tevez, Bellamy and Adebayor is better than one with Tevez, Adebayor, Bellamy and Santa Cruz – I’m not saying Santa Cruz should be the one to make way necessarily, but the former group is clearly better than the latter.
As with previous signings – Lescott, Barry, Tevez, Adebayor – signing Torres would mean taking one of a rival team’s best players. While Man City would improve, Liverpool would be losing a jewel in their crown. The amount of money may be an issue: paying Liverpool £60m or upward would go some way to easing their financial problems, but this should be the last thought on the mind of City fans.
Of the best strikers in the world, and that is what Torres is, he is the most available. Villa has just gone to Barca, Drogba is committed to Chelsea and Rooney wouldn’t go to City for all the money in the world. It may not be what the rest of the Premier League wants to hear, but if City and Mancini are willing to meet Liverpool’s asking price, then they have every right to attempt to persuade him to come. If you are in a position to buy the best, then that is what you should do, otherwise it would be in direct contradiction with their ambitions.
