According to Tancredi Palmeri and Tutto Mercato Web, Leeds are interested in signing SPAL striker Andrea Petagna.
What’s the word?
Leeds’ transfer activity during the summer hasn’t been too busy as they welcomed Ben White and Helder Costa to the club whilst also bringing back Jack Harrison.
However, they haven’t dipped their toes into the market since Pontus Jansson left whilst a new striker has seemingly been off the table after Victor Orta confirmed they were 90% done in their plans for the summer.
Yet, things could be about to become far rosier again after Tutto Mercato Web claimed they’d offered €15m (£13.7m) for Italian forward Petagna.
There could be a stumbling block in terms of the fee, though, with SPAL searching for something closer to €25m (£22.8m).
Game-changing for Leeds?
The fact Leeds haven’t brought in a new striker during the window is perhaps rather questionable after the problems Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe had with injuries last term.
The former missed 22 games through injury and hasn’t shown too many signs of improving his form throughout pre-season.
With Roofe out injured it means they’ll go into the opening day with just one striker.
Phil Hay confirmed earlier this month that it was unlikely they’d sign a new attacker too. Something that had fans extremely concerned.
Therefore, bringing in someone like Petagna would finally give them a reason to be happy.
The 24-year-old was in top form in Italy last term, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. Having produced those sorts of numbers at a higher level, it would be somewhat of a coup if Leeds were able to bring him to Elland Road.
Even just signing another striker would probably be enough to bring more optimism to certain fans, let alone one who’s produced the goods in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
Standing at 6 foot 2, he can be a big presence and could give the Whites a different dynamic in attack.
As Leeds aim to achieve promotion once again, this type of signing could significantly improve their hopes and breathe fresh positivity into the club.
